  • No food after 10 PM the night before surgery (unless told otherwise).
  • Water is usually fine until 2 hours before arrival, but follow your vet's guidelines.
  • Ask your vet which medications (if any) should be given on the morning of surgery.
  • Do not give over-the-counter meds without approval.
  • Bathe your pet 1–2 days before surgery if needed. Avoid bathing afterward for at least 10–14 days.
  • Ensure their bedding is clean.
  • Bring your pet in a secure carrier or on a leash.
  • Arrive on time and bring any paperwork or medications with you.
  • Inform your vet of any new symptoms: coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
  • Surgery may be postponed if your pet is unwell.

Post-Surgery Care Instructions (at Home)

  • Keep your pet in a quiet, comfortable space for at least 24–72 hours.
  • Limit activity—no running, jumping, or playing until cleared by your vet.
  • Do not allow licking or chewing at the incision. Use a cone (E-collar) if necessary.
  • Keep the incision clean and dry. Do not bathe your pet until stitches are removed or dissolved.
  • Give all prescribed medications exactly as directed.
  • Do not give human medications unless specifically instructed.
  • Offer a small meal and water a few hours after returning home.
  • Your pet may have a reduced appetite for 24 hours.

Call your vet if you notice:

  • Swelling, redness, or discharge at the incision
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy lasting more than 24 hours
  • Loss of appetite beyond 24 hours

Attend any follow-up appointments for stitch removal or re-checks.
